LeaguesStevenage Chess Club has four teams playing in separate divisions of the Hertfordshire League.
Our 1st team play in Division 2 and will hope to compete for promotion to Division 1, whilst our 4th team play in the bottom division of the Hertfordshire League, and is a good team for those less experienced players looking to improve their game.
Russell Trophy competition
We enter the knock-out competitions run by the Hertfordshire League; the Russell Trophy is competed for by the strongest teams in the county; the Sharp Trophy is limited to players graded under 160, and the U140 K/O Trophy is as implied by title, limited to players graded under 140.
Stevenage are the reigning U140 K/O holders.
Hertford & District League
We also enter the Hertford & District League. This is a single division league split into Northern and Southern sections. Stevenage compete in the Northern section, and if we finish in the top two, we progress to knock-out stage semi-finals against Southern section opponents.
Jamboree and Team Blitz event
The Hertford & District League also organises an annual Jamboree event and an annual team Blitz event.
The Field Trophy is an annual contest at the end of the season competed for by Stevenage and Letchworth involving as many boards as the clubs can muster, usually about 12 to 15, so involves players of all strengths.
The Blitz Trophy is a fitting climax to our season, when club members compete against each other in games that are limited to three minutes plus an increment of 4 seconds per move per player.
Player of the year
The Stevenage player (who has represented the club in at least five matches) with the highest percentage of results over the season is awarded the Player of the Year Trophy.
Arthur Gray board
The Stevenage player who makes the most appearances for the club in a season is awarded the Arthur Gray board and set.
